This qualification is aimed at those who wish to become a Paediatric First Aider in the workplace, parents and people who work with children in the absence of their parents with a responsibility for the welfare of infants and children. The course aims to give the candidate knowledge and assess them on their ability to deal with emergency situations, how to recognise and respond to serious medical conditions and serious injuries.
Intended audience
This qualification is for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide first aid to children (including babies) when dealing with:
An emergency situation
Chronic or sudden paediatric illness
Paediatric injury
Note: This qualification fulfils Ofsted’s first aid requirements for early years teachers, nursery workers and child minders (as defined within the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2014 and within The Child Care Register guide).
Course Content
Role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider:
Role, responsibilities, definition of an infant and a child, infection control, consent, completing accident forms/reports,
first aid and personal protection equipment
Incident and casualty assessment:
Scene survey, primary survey, calling for help/information needed
CPR:
An infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
Unconscious casualty:
Recovery position
Management of a seizure
Choking casualty:
Recognition and treatment
Anaphylaxis:
Recognition and treatment of anaphylaxis
Shock:
Recognition and treatment of shock in an infant and a child
External bleeding:
Types and treatment of bleeding
Minor injuries:
Small cuts, grazes, bumps and bruises, small splinters and nosebleeds
Unit 2 – Managing Paediatric Illness, Injuries and Emergencies
Bites and stings:
Complications and treatment
Eyes, ears and nose conditions:
Recognition and treatment
Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains:
